The hot months are here and the sun shows no mercy; beaches and pools are hoppin’! With UV rays in full-force, how are you protecting your skin from the dangers of the sun? At this point in time, the odds are you are doing what everyone else is doing; using store bought sunscreens.
Storebought Sunscreen
During the swim season, no matter what store you walk in, you’re likely to see shelves lined with many different sunscreens right as soon as you get through the door. Just because these things are sold at stores, it doesn’t mean it is the best form of protection you can offer your skin; as a matter of fact, you are likely getting more than you bargain for! More toxins, that is.
If you took a moment to research each and every chemical that is pumped into sunscreen, you might be in for a shock! And with your skin absorbing a good majority of anything you apply to it, you’re not really doing your body a favor by applying such sunscreen!
DIY Sunscreen Recipe
Here is a recipe that’s easy to make and won’t break the bank!
You need:
- ¼ cup of shea butter
- ¼ cup of coconut oil
- ⅛ cup of beeswax
- 2 tablespoons of zinc oxide
That’s right, just using these four ingredients can make you a sunscreen with an SPF of 30, which is all you really need in a sunscreen!
Here’s how to make it:
- In a double boiler (or you can place a glass jar in a couple inches of boiling water), combine shea butter and coconut oil.
- Mix in the beeswax until well blended.
- Remove from heat and mix in the zinc oxide using an electric mixer, until no more clumps are present. The texture should be smooth.
- Pour the mixture into tins or small mason jars and let cool for a couple of hours.
- Once cool, the mixture will thicken into the sunscreen you will use, and now it’s time to use it in the sun!
That’s all there is to DIY sunscreen, pretty simple, right? I think so! It’s always nice when we learn of a new product that we can make in our very own kitchen, instead of trusting our health to the hands of those who are solely interested in profit. At least when you make skincare products yourself, your only interest is your health, so you know you’re only getting the best.
If everyone knew how simple DIY sunscreen really is, more people would probably make their own! Seriously, who doesn’t love all-natural products over store bought mystery chemicals? We all deserve to know what’s in our skincare products, and we deserve for those ingredients to be of good quality and not hazardous to our health.
Making your own skincare products can become addicting, so proceed with caution!
